Arms of the Lords of Banff

The title of Lord Banff was a special noble rank in Scotland. It was created on August 31, 1642, for a man named Sir George Ogilvy. He was already a Baronet, which is another type of noble title, from a place called Forglen in the area of Banffshire. This Baronet title was given to him on July 30, 1627.

A "Lord" is a person with a high rank in society, often with land and special rights. The "Peerage of Scotland" is a list of all these noble titles in Scotland. When a title is "extinct or dormant," it means there is no one left to hold it, or it is not being used anymore.

The Lords Banff (1642-1803)

The first Lord Banff was Sir George Ogilvy. After he passed away in 1663, his son became the second Lord.

Second Lord Banff

The second Lord Banff was a "Cavalier." This was a name for supporters of King Charles I during the English Civil War. He was also a member of the Parliament of Scotland, which was like the government's law-making body at the time. When he died in 1668, his oldest son became the third Lord.

Third Lord Banff

The third Lord Banff, George Ogilvy, lived from 1649 to 1713. He was a strong supporter of the "Union" between England and Scotland. This Union happened in 1707 and joined the two countries into Great Britain. His son then became the fourth Lord.

Later Lords Banff

The fourth Lord Banff had two sons who later held the title: the fifth and sixth Lords. The sixth Lord Banff, Alexander Ogilvy, was a captain in the Royal Navy, which is the navy of Great Britain. He never married. When he died young in 1746, there were no direct children from the third Lord's family line to inherit the title.

So, the title went to his second cousin, Sir Alexander Ogilvy. He became the seventh Lord Banff. This Sir Alexander Ogilvy was the grandson of another Alexander Ogilvy. This other Alexander Ogilvy was the younger son of the second Lord Banff. He had also been made a Baronet in 1701.

End of the Title

The seventh Lord Banff passed away in 1771. His oldest son, William Ogilvy, became the eighth Lord Banff. William never married. When he died in 1803, there was no one left to inherit the title of Lord Banff or the two Baronet titles. So, the titles either became "extinct" (meaning they ended completely) or "dormant" (meaning they are not being used, but could possibly be claimed by someone in the future).

The family estate, Forglen, then went to the eighth Lord Banff's sister, Jane. She was married to Sir George Abercromby.
