The Lord Block is an old and important building in downtown Lewiston, Maine. It was built a long time ago, in 1865. This makes it one of the oldest business buildings in the city! It helps us remember what Lewiston looked like when it was first growing. The Lord Block was added to a special list called the National Register of Historic Places in 1986 because it's so important.

Discovering the Lord Block

The Lord Block stands on Lisbon Street. This street is Lewiston's main business area. You can find it at the corner of Lisbon and Cedar Streets.

The Building's Look

The Lord Block is a two-and-a-half-story building. It is made of strong brick. It also has nice granite stone details. The roof has a pointed shape at the front. It also has another pointed section on the north side.

The front of the building has two similar shops. Each shop has an entrance that is set back a little. Next to the entrance is a large display window. Strong granite pillars separate the doors and windows. A modern awning now covers both shop fronts. It also reaches over to the building next door.

The windows on the upper floors are simple sash windows. They are set in square openings. These windows have granite sills and tops. The pointed part of the roof on the north side has cool decorative shingles. It also has two window openings.

A Look Back in Time

The Lord Block was built in 1865. It was made for James C. and Rufus Lord. They sold "provisions," which means food and supplies. This building was probably one of the first shops on this part of Lisbon Street. It was also very close to the busy mills.

The rules for building it were strict. It could not be too tall. It also had to be made of brick or stone. The Lord's store was very successful. James Lord even built a fancy house in 1885. That house is called the James C. Lord House.
