Lord Charles Murray-Aynsley was an important English church leader. He was born on October 21, 1771, and passed away on May 5, 1808.

About His Life

Charles Murray-Aynsley was the youngest of nine children. His parents were John Murray, 3rd Duke of Atholl, and Charlotte Murray, Duchess of Atholl. He was born with the name Charles Murray.

On June 18, 1793, he married Alicia Mitford. She was the daughter of George Mitford. Alicia also inherited money from her great-uncle, Gawen Aynsley. After their marriage, Charles took on the last name Aynsley.

His Role as Dean

In 1803, Murray-Aynsley became the Dean of Bocking. This was a special church role in Essex, England. As Dean, he was in charge of the church and its community.

He once hosted King Louis XVIII of France at his home, Bocking Deanery. The King was living in exile nearby at Gosfield Hall. The whole village of Bocking helped with the fun and celebrations. Everyone had a job to do for the royal visit. On the day the King arrived, it snowed a lot. Some people even helped clear the snow for the King's procession!

He also held other church positions. He was the leader at Kirk Andreas and was also an Archdeacon of Man.

His Family

Lord Charles and his wife, Alicia, had seven children:

  • Charlotte Murray-Aynsley (born 1794, died 1827). She married Sir John Oswald.
  • John Murray-Aynsley (born 1795, died 1870). He married Emma Sara Peach and they had children. One of their children was Hugh Murray-Aynsley.
  • Charles Collingwood Murray-Aynsley (born 1796, died 1797).
  • George Edward Murray-Aynsley (born 1798). He passed away when he was young.
  • Athole Keturah Murray-Aynsley (born 1801, died 1844). She married Sir Herbert Oakeley, 3rd Baronet.
  • Elizabeth Anne Murray-Aynsley (born 1802, died 1880).
  • Charles Edward Murray-Aynsley (born 1805, died 1815).
