A Lord Lieutenant is a special representative of the King or Queen in a county. They are like the monarch's personal helper in that area. The role of Lord Lieutenant for South Yorkshire was created on 1 April 1974. This happened when South Yorkshire became a new type of area called a metropolitan county. Before this, the area was part of the West Riding lieutenancy.

The Lord Lieutenant is the most senior person representing the monarch in their county. They help with royal visits and promote good citizenship. They also support local community groups and organisations.

There is also a Vice Lord Lieutenant and several Deputy Lord Lieutenants who help the main Lord Lieutenant.
