First Time the Title Was Created

The title of Lord of Lorne was first given to Robert Stewart of Durisdeer. He was the son of John Stewart of Innermeath. Robert's mother was Isabel MacDougall. Her father was John Gallda MacDougall, who was also known as the Lord of Lorne.

The MacDougall family used to own a lot of land in a place called Argyll. But they were sent away from their lands during the time of King Robert I. Later, during the reign of King David II, the MacDougalls got their lands back. John Gallda MacDougall was very close to King David II.

However, when King Robert II came to power, John Gallda was not as favored. John Gallda MacDougall died without any sons. So, his two daughters, including Isabel, married sons from the Stewart family. This is how the Stewart family became connected to the Lorne lands.

Robert Stewart, who became the 1st Lord of Lorne, was followed by his oldest son, John. John was a member of the Scottish Parliament. In 1463, John, the 2nd Lord, passed away. His younger brother, Walter, then became the 3rd Lord Lorne. Walter Stewart later gave up this title. He was then given a new title, the 1st Lord Innermeath. This happened on either November 30, 1463, or April 17, 1470.

Second Time the Title Was Created

The title of Lord of Lorne was created again on April 17, 1470. This time, it was given to Colin Campbell, 1st Earl of Argyll. He was married to Isabelle Stewart. Isabelle was the daughter of John Stewart, 2nd Lord Lorne. She was also the niece of William Stewart, 1st Lord Innermeath.

Since then, the title of Lord of Lorne has been a smaller title that belongs to the Earl of Argyll. From 1701 onwards, it became a smaller title of the Duke of Argyll. This means that whoever is the Earl or Duke of Argyll also holds the title of Lord of Lorne.
