Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Lorenzo Alcantuz (born in 1741, died in 1782) was a brave leader from Colombia. He is known for his important role in a big movement called the Revolución Comunera in 1781. This movement was a major step towards Colombia becoming an independent country, free from Spanish rule.

A Time of Change

The Comunera Revolution was a time when people in New Granada (which is now Colombia) wanted more fairness. They were unhappy with some of the rules and taxes set by the Spanish government. Lorenzo Alcantuz, along with another leader named Jose Antonio Galan, helped to lead these protests.

The Spark of Protest

The protests started in December 1780 in towns like Simacota, Mogotes, Barichara, and Curití. Soon, the town of San Gil joined in. In San Gil, Lorenzo Alcantuz did something very symbolic. He stepped on the royal coat of arms, which was a symbol of Spain's power. This act showed that the people no longer accepted Spanish rule.

Standing Up for Freedom

The Spanish authorities did not like these protests. They saw Lorenzo Alcantuz and other leaders like Jose Antonio Galan, Isidro Molina, and Juan Manuel José Ortiz as a threat. Because of their leadership in the revolution, these brave men faced severe consequences. They lost their lives in Bogota on February 1, 1782. Their actions, however, inspired many others and helped pave the way for Colombia's future independence.

Remembering a Hero

Today, Lorenzo Alcantuz is remembered as a hero in Colombia. An indoor stadium in San Gil is named after him, honoring his courage and his fight for freedom.
