Lorenzo Costa (born in 1460 – died on March 5, 1535) was an Italian painter. He lived during the exciting time of the Renaissance. This was a period in Europe when art, science, and culture saw a huge rebirth. Costa is known for his beautiful paintings.

The Life of Lorenzo Costa

Early Life and Training

Lorenzo Costa was born in a city called Ferrara, Italy. When he was in his early twenties, he moved to Bologna. Many artists worked in both Ferrara and Bologna. Because of this, some people think he was part of the "School of Ferrara." This means he followed the style of painters from Ferrara.

It is also thought that he might have learned painting from an artist named Cosimo Tura. Tura was a well-known painter of that time.

Important Paintings and Friendships

In 1483, Lorenzo Costa painted a very famous artwork. It was called the Bentivoglio Altarpiece. An altarpiece is a work of art placed behind the altar in a church. He also painted other pictures on the walls of the Bentivoglio family's chapel. This chapel was inside a church called San Giacomo Maggiore.

Costa was a close friend of another painter named Francesco Francia. Francia was greatly inspired by Costa's work.

Court Painter in Mantua

In 1509, Lorenzo Costa moved to Mantua. Here, he became the official painter for the royal family. He worked for Marquis Francesco Gonzaga and his wife, Isabella d'Este. Being a "court painter" meant he created art especially for the rulers.

Isabella d'Este had a special room in the Ducal Palace. This room was called her studiolo. For this room, Costa painted two famous mythological pictures. These were the Allegory of Isabella d'Este's Coronation and the Reign of Comus. These paintings were based on drawings by another famous artist, Andrea Mantegna. The "Allegory" painting is now in a famous museum in Paris, France, called the Louvre.

Later Life and Legacy

Lorenzo Costa passed away in Mantua in 1535. His sons, Ippolito and Girolamo, also became painters. Girolamo's son, Lorenzo the Younger, also followed in the family's artistic footsteps.

Many other artists worked with or learned from Lorenzo Costa. These included Dosso Dossi, Ludovico Mazzolino, and Lorenzo Leonbruno. His work helped shape the art of the Italian Renaissance.
