Lori Lamel facts for kids
Lori Faith Lamel is a scientist who studies how computers can understand human speech. She is known for her work with the TIMIT speech collection, which is a large set of American English speech recordings. She also works on ways for computers to figure out if someone is speaking (called voice activity detection). Her research helps computers recognize who is talking (speaker recognition). She also helps them understand other things about speech, like emotions, even if they aren't words.
Lori Lamel works as a senior research scientist at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS). This is a big research organization in France. She is part of the Spoken Language Processing Group.
Education and Career
Lori Lamel studied at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT). This is a very famous university in the United States. She earned two degrees there in 1980: one in electrical engineering and another in computer science. She also worked with Bell Labs during this time.
Later, in 1988, she earned her Ph.D. from MIT. Her special study was about how we understand speech sounds. In 2004, she completed a special research degree called a habilitation at Paris-Sud University in France.
Lori Lamel first visited CNRS as a researcher in 1989. She became a full-time researcher there in 1991. In 2005, she was promoted to a senior researcher.
Recognition
Lori Lamel has received important awards for her work. In 2015, she was named a fellow of the International Speech Communication Association. This award recognized her important contributions to how humans and machines talk to each other, especially with speech in many languages.
In 2021, she was also named a Fellow of the IEEE. This is a very high honor from a big group of engineers. She received this award for her work on making computers better at understanding speech automatically.
