Lorinda Munson Bryant facts for kids
Lorinda Munson Bryant (born March 21, 1855 – died December 13, 1933) was an American writer and teacher. She was born near Granville, Ohio. After her husband passed away, she took over his drug store business. She later became the first woman in Ohio to be a registered pharmacist, meaning she was officially allowed to prepare and sell medicines. She also founded a school for girls and wrote many books, including some for children.
Early Life and Education
Lorinda Munson was born in 1855. Her father, Marvin M. Munson, was a lawyer, and her mother was Emma Sabin Culbertson. In 1875, she married Charles W. Bryant, who owned a drug store. When he died in 1886, Lorinda took charge of the store.
She was very dedicated to her education. In 1892, she earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Granville Female College. The next year, she studied at the Chicago College of Pharmacy. She continued her studies at Denison University. After all this hard work, she became the first woman in Ohio to be a registered pharmacist.
A Career in Education
Lorinda Bryant didn't stop there. She also studied science at Cornell University. Later, she decided to open her own school for girls. This school was called the Montrose School and was located in South Orange, New Jersey. The school helped many young girls learn and grow. However, it closed in 1905.
Becoming a Writer
After her school closed, Lorinda Bryant started a new career as a writer. She became very successful, publishing more than twenty books! One of her most famous books was A History of Painting, which came out in 1906. This book helped many people learn about art.
