Loring (Lingít: Kax̱.àan) was a small community in Alaska. It was started in 1885 and had the very first post office in the area. Loring is located in the Ketchikan Gateway Borough.
Today, Loring is considered a census-designated place (CDP). This means it's an area the government defines for counting people, even if it's not an official town. According to the 2020 census, no one lives there permanently. However, a few people might stay there during the summer.
Loring is just north of Ketchikan on Revillagigedo Island. Long ago, Loring was a busy place. It even competed with Ketchikan to be the main center for fishing and logging in the region.

U.S. Decennial Census |
Loring first appeared in the U.S. Census in 1890. It was a fishing village with a cannery. At that time, 200 people lived there. Most of them (120) were Tlingit Native people. There were also 51 Asian people (Chinese), 27 white people, and 2 Creole people. This count also included nearby Native fishing camps.
In 1900, the population was 168 people. After that, Loring was not listed in the census for a long time. Even though the cannery and post office stayed open until the 1930s, the population dropped.
Loring finally appeared in the census again in 2010. By then, only 4 people lived there. In 2020, the population was 0. This makes Loring a ghost town today.
