Loring McMillen was a special historian for Staten Island, New York. He was born there in 1906 and lived until 1991. He worked hard to save important parts of Staten Island's history. For example, he helped protect the amazing photos of Alice Austen. He also worked to bring back Historic Richmond Town to its old glory.
About Loring McMillen
Loring McMillen was born on Staten Island on March 10, 1906. He went to Union College in Schenectady, New York. He also studied architecture at Columbia University.
In 1928, he started working for Bell Telephone Company. He designed paths for telephone cables. He worked there until he retired in 1966.
In 1934, Loring McMillen became Staten Island's official historian. This meant it was his job to preserve and share the island's past. He passed away on March 19, 1991, in Richmondtown, Staten Island. He was 85 years old. After he died, Richard B. Dickenson took over his role as the Staten Island Borough Historian.
Awards and Recognition
Loring McMillen received an important award in 1955. It was called the Cornelius Amory Pugsley Local Medal Award. He received it from the American Academy for Park and Recreation Administration. This award recognized his great work in parks and recreation.
