Los Alvarez was first listed as a census designated place in the 2000 U.S. Census. Before the 2010 U.S. Census, four new CDPs were created from its original area. These new areas are Barrera, El Quiote, Flor del Rio, and Palo Blanco. This is why the population numbers changed so much.

Schools in Los Alvarez
The community of Los Alvarez is divided between two different school districts.
- Half of Los Alvarez is part of the Roma Independent School District.
- The other half is in the Rio Grande City Grulla Independent School District. This district used to be called the Rio Grande City Consolidated Independent School District.
For students living in the Roma part of Los Alvarez, their elementary school is Delia Gonzalez (DG) Garcia Elementary School. The only high school for the Roma district is Roma High School.
Most of the area that used to be Los Alvarez was also part of Roma ISD. Schools for those areas included Anna S. Canavan Elementary School (for pre-kindergarten), R.T. Barrera Elementary School (for grades K-5), Ramiro Barrera Middle School (for grades 6-8), and Roma High School (for grades 9-12). The eastern part of the old Los Alvarez area was served by the Rio Grande City Consolidated Independent School District.
