The Los Santos Zone (Spanish: Zona de los Santos) is a beautiful mountain area in Costa Rica. It is located in the San José Province, in the middle-south part of the country. People also call it "Zona de los Santos" or "Valle de los Santos" in Spanish.

This region includes several valleys and towns. The main towns are Tarrazú, Dota, and León Cortés Castro. Other nearby areas, like San Cristóbal and Frailes, are also connected to the Los Santos Zone.

What's in a Name?

The name "Los Santos" means "The Saints" in Spanish. This name comes from the many towns in the area that are named after Catholic saints.

For example, there are towns like Santa María, San Marcos, San Carlos, San Lorenzo, San Pablo, San Andrés, San Antonio, and San Isidro. All these names honor different saints.

Nature and Parks

The Los Quetzales National Park is found in the Los Santos Zone. This park is a special place where you can see amazing plants and animals. It is named after the beautiful quetzal bird, which lives there.

How People Make a Living

Farming and Food

The Los Santos Zone is very famous for its coffee. It is one of the most important coffee-growing areas in Costa Rica. Farmers here work hard to produce high-quality coffee beans.

Besides coffee, people also grow apples in this region. The cool mountain climate is perfect for these fruits.

Family Support

Many years ago, some people from this area moved to the United States, especially to New Jersey. Even though they live far away, they still help their families back home.

These family members send money to support their relatives and help the local coffee farms. This support is very important, especially when coffee prices around the world go down. It helps families and the community stay strong.

Visiting the Zone

The Los Santos Zone is a great place for tourists to visit. There are many reasons why people like to come here:

  • You can learn about coffee production and even visit coffee farms.
  • The Los Quetzales National Park offers amazing nature experiences.
  • It's easy to get to the zone using the Inter-American Highway (Route 2).
  • The area is also close to the capital city region, making it convenient for visitors.
