A Look Back at Lough Sillan's Past
Lough Sillan has a long history, including a sad event that happened many years ago.
The 1878 Boat Accident
On July 25, 1878, a schoolmaster named Michael McCabe took his students on a boat trip on Lough Sillan. Sadly, the boat tipped over and sank a short distance from the shore. This accident led to the loss of 17 lives. Those who passed away included the school principal, his wife, two other school staff members, and 13 students. It was one of the most serious boating accidents to happen on an inland lake in Ireland.
Remembering the Past
To remember those who were lost, a special plaque was put up. In July 2004, this plaque was placed on the lake shore. It's right next to the path that those who died would have used. This memorial helps people remember the event and honor the lives lost.
