Louis, Count of Gravina facts for kids
Louis of Durazzo (born in 1324 – died on July 22, 1362) was an important noble who held the titles of Count of Gravina and Morrone. He was the son of John of Durazzo and Agnes of Périgord.
In 1337, Louis was given a big job as the main leader and general of the Kingdom of Albania. As his family, the Durazzeschi, became more important in the court of Naples during the rule of Queen Joanna I, Louis served as one of her special representatives to the Roman Curia (the Pope's administration).
However, things changed when Louis I of Hungary invaded. In 1348, Louis of Durazzo's older brother, Charles, Duke of Durazzo, died. Louis and his younger brother, Robert of Durazzo, were put in prison. They stayed there until 1352.
After his release, Louis spent the rest of his life trying to start rebellions against Queen Joanna in a region called Apulia. He often got help from groups of soldiers known as Free Companions. These revolts were eventually stopped in 1360 by Louis of Taranto. Louis of Durazzo was then imprisoned in the Castel dell'Ovo in Naples, where his life ended in 1362.
