About the Library Building
The Goodall Library building is at the corner of Main and Elm Streets. It's a one-and-a-half story building made of brick. It has a cool slate roof and a small tower called a cupola. The building was designed in 1937 by an architect named William O. Armitage.
A Special Gift
The library building was a gift to the town of Sanford. Dr. and Mrs. Harvey Thornburgh gave it in honor of Mrs. Thornburgh's father, Louis B. Goodall. He was a very well-known person in Sanford. The city owns the building, and a group of trustees helps manage it.
Building Changes Over Time
The original part of the building was built in 1937. Later, in 1976, a two-story modern section was added to the back. This addition helped the library have more space for its growing collection and services.
Library History
The idea for the Sanford Library started a long time ago. On June 18, 1898, the Sanford Library Association was created. Their goal was to provide library services for everyone in Sanford.
Opening Day
Thomas Goodall was the first president of the library association. He let them use his property on School Street for the library. The library first opened its doors for people to borrow books on December 31, 1898. Just a little over a year later, on June 1, 1900, the library became free for everyone to use.
Branch Libraries
Over the years, the library tried to reach more people. The Carpentier Branch opened in 1950. However, it had to close in 1991 because of budget cuts. Today, the nearby village of Springvale has its own public library. It's about 2.5 miles away from the Goodall Library.
