Louis Chauvin (born March 13, 1881 – died March 26, 1908) was an American ragtime musician. He was known for his piano playing and for composing ragtime music.

Early Life and Musical Beginnings

Louis Chauvin was born in St. Louis, Missouri. His father was of Mexican Spanish-Indian background, and his mother was African-American. Many people in St. Louis thought he was the best pianist around the year 1900. He was part of a group of ragtime musicians. They often met at a place called the Rosebud bar, owned by Tom Turpin. Other musicians like Joe Jordan were also part of this group.

Musical Career and Compositions

Louis Chauvin did not live very long, and he died without ever recording his music. This makes it hard for us to fully understand his amazing talent today. However, other musicians who knew him always remembered him as a very gifted performer and composer.

He is mostly remembered for a ragtime piece called "Heliotrope Bouquet". He shared the credit for writing this song with another famous ragtime composer, Scott Joplin. It seems that Chauvin created the first two parts of the song. Scott Joplin then wrote the last two parts and helped finish the song. This was because Chauvin was not in good health at the time.

Published Works by Louis Chauvin

Chauvin had only a few of his musical pieces published. These are the songs that were officially printed and shared:

  • "The Moon Is Shining in the Skies" (written with Sam Patterson, 1903)
  • "Babe, It's Too Long Off" (with words by Elmer Bowman, 1906)
  • "Heliotrope Bouquet" (written with Scott Joplin, 1907)

Later Life and Passing

Louis Chauvin passed away in Chicago when he was 27 years old. He is buried in Calvary Cemetery in St. Louis, Missouri.
