Louis Edmond Duranty (born June 6, 1833 – died April 9, 1880) was a French writer and art critic. He wrote many novels and articles about art.

Duranty was a strong supporter of new art styles. He first liked Realism, which focused on showing life as it truly was. Later, he supported Impressionism, a style where artists used light and color to capture a moment.

He was good friends with the famous artist Edgar Degas. Degas even painted a well-known picture of Duranty in 1879. This painting is now in the Burrell Collection in Glasgow. Duranty often visited the Café Guerbois, a popular meeting spot for artists and writers in Paris.

Duranty's Ideas on Art

Duranty believed in showing "truth" in art. He used this idea as the main slogan for his short-lived magazine, Réalisme. This magazine was published from 1856 to 1857. In its second issue, Duranty wrote down the main rules for the Realism art movement.

He also wrote an important book called The New Painting. In this book, he explained his thoughts on the new art styles emerging at the time. He helped people understand and appreciate the changing world of art.
