He is a former politician who served as a Member of the Legislative Assembly (MLA) for the area of Amittuq from 2004 to 2013. During his time as an MLA, he also held important roles as a minister in the Nunavut government.
Early Life and Public Service
Before becoming an MLA, Louis Tapardjuk was the mayor of Igloolik, which is a community in Nunavut. He also worked as a board member for the Tunngavik Federation of Nunavut. This organization helps protect the rights of Inuit people in Nunavut.
Louis Tapardjuk was first elected as an MLA for Amittuq in the 2004 Nunavut general election. An MLA is like a representative for a specific area, helping to make laws and decisions for the people. He served in this role for nine years, until 2013.
While serving as an MLA, Mr. Tapardjuk was also part of the Executive Council of Nunavut. This is like the cabinet of the government. He was the Minister of Finance, which means he was in charge of the government's money. He was also the Minister of Culture, Language, Elders and Youth (CLEY).
