Who Was Louisa, Countess of Mansfield?
Louisa Cathcart was born in 1758. Her father was Charles Cathcart, 9th Lord Cathcart. Her mother was Jane Hamilton. Louisa was baptised on July 1, 1758, in a town called Alloa in Scotland.
First Marriage and Family Life
On May 5, 1776, Louisa married David Murray. He was known as Viscount Stormont at the time. This was his second marriage. He was also about 30 years older than Louisa.
Together, Louisa and David had five children:
- David William Murray, 3rd Earl of Mansfield (1777–1840)
- Lieutenant-general The Hon. George Murray (1780–1848)
- Major The Hon. Charles Murray (1781–1859)
- General Sir Henry Murray (1784–1860)
- Lady Caroline Murray (died 1867)
Life at Scone Palace
The family's main home was Scone Palace in Scotland. At first, the house needed some work. Improvements were made until 1783. After that, it was a comfortable place for the family to live.
David Murray was also the British ambassador in Paris. A famous French writer, Madame du Deffand, once described Louisa. She said Louisa was "pretty" and "full of intelligence."
The Mansfield Title
In 1776, David Murray's uncle, William Murray, 1st Earl of Mansfield, was given the title of Earl of Mansfield. He had no children of his own. So, the title was set up to pass to Louisa and her children with Lord Stormont. This meant that the title would stay in their family.
When her first husband died in 1796, their son inherited the title. Louisa lived longer than her son. When she died in 1843, her grandson, William, became the 4th Earl.
Second Marriage and Later Life
Louisa was still in her thirties when her first husband passed away. She married again on October 19, 1797. Her second husband was her first cousin, The Hon. Robert Fulke Greville. They were married at St Marylebone Parish Church.
With her second husband, Louisa had three more children:
- Lady Georgiana Greville (1798–1871)
- Lady Louisa Greville (1800–1883)
- The Hon. Robert Fulke Greville (1800–1867)
A famous artist named George Romney painted a portrait of Louisa. She died on July 11, 1843. She was buried in her second husband's family tomb. This tomb is in the chapter house at St Mary's, Warwick.
