Miren Lourdes Oñederra Olaizola (born 9 June 1958) is a Basque writer and professor from Spain. She is known for her successful novels and her work teaching at universities.
Early Life and Education
Lourdes Oñederra was born in San Sebastián, a city in Spain, in 1958. She loved learning and went to college in Spain. She earned her first degree from the University of Deusto.
After finishing her studies in Spain in 1980, she traveled to the United States. There, she earned her master's degree from the University of Iowa. Later, she returned to the Basque Country. She completed her doctorate degree in philology, which is the study of language in historical sources. Her supervisor was a famous scholar named Koldo Mitxelena.
Becoming a Professor and Writer
In 1982, Lourdes Oñederra became a professor in her hometown. She taught at the university there.
In 1999, she published her very first novel. The book was called And the woman said to the serpent. This novel became very popular and won several awards. One important award it received was the Basque Government Prize for Literature in 2000. Her book was so well-liked that it was translated into many languages, including Spanish, English, and Russian.
By 2014, she was still working as a professor. She taught at the University of the Basque Country.
