Fairmount is a small community in Tewksbury Township, Hunterdon County, New Jersey. It's called an unincorporated community, which means it's a group of homes and businesses that aren't officially a separate town or city. Fairmount is located along County Route 517.

This area was first known as Parkersville. It got its name from James Parker, who lived from 1725 to 1797. The southern part of Fairmount is sometimes called Lower Fairmount.

A Look Back: Fairmount's History

The first European settlers arrived in this area around 1740. They initially called the place Fox Hill, named after a local farmer.

Early Churches in Fairmount

The Fairmount Presbyterian Church started in 1747. It began as a German Reformed group meeting in a simple log cabin. The church building you see today was constructed much later, between 1851 and 1852. It shows off two cool styles of architecture: Greek Revival and Shingle.

Another important church, the Methodist Episcopal Church of Fairmount, was built in 1837. The current Fairmount United Methodist Church was built in 1868. It features Romanesque Revival and Italianate styles.

Growing as a Community

In the early 1800s, a mill was built on the Rockaway Creek. Mills were very important back then for grinding grain.

By the 1880s, Fairmount had grown quite a bit. It was home to two churches, two stores, a sawmill (for cutting wood), a gristmill (for grinding grain), and a schoolhouse. It also had the largest tannery in the county, which was a place where animal hides were turned into leather.

Fairmount's Historic District

The Fairmount Historic District covers the entire community. It was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1996. This means the area is special because of its unique buildings (architecture), its role in early settlement, and its industrial past.
