New Jersey is a state located in the Northeastern part of the United States. It's known for being very densely populated.
In 2020, New Jersey had over 9.2 million people, making it the 11th most populated state. But it's also one of the smallest states by land area, ranking fifth. This means a lot of people live in a small space!
New Jersey is divided into 21 counties. Within these counties, there are 564 different local areas called municipalities. These municipalities come in five main types:
- 252 boroughs
- 52 cities
- 15 towns
- 241 townships
- 4 villages
The biggest city in New Jersey by population is Newark, with over 311,000 residents. On the other hand, the smallest is Walpack Township, which only has seven residents! New Jersey is also the most populated state that doesn't have any cities ranked in the top 50 largest cities in the entire United States.
Just like in most states in the Northeast, all parts of New Jersey are officially organized into one of these types of municipalities.
