History
Factories and Fibers
For many years, Lowland was an important place for factories that made "synthetic fibers." These are man-made threads, like nylon or rayon, used to create fabrics and other products.
Several big companies had factories here. These included the American Enka Company, BASF, and Liberty Fibers. They all operated on the same large factory site in Lowland.
Geography
Where is Lowland?
Lowland is located in eastern Tennessee. It is about 6.2 miles (10 kilometers) southeast of a larger town called Morristown.
You can find Lowland near major roads like Tennessee State Route 160 and Interstate 81. A train line, the Norfolk Southern Railway, also runs nearby.
Mail and Boundaries
Lowland used to have its own post office from 1949 until 2011. Even though the post office closed, the community still has its own ZIP code, which is 37778.
Some of the land where the old factories were, including a water treatment plant, has since become part of the City of Morristown. This process is called "annexation," which means a city expands its official boundaries to include new areas.
