Loxton House is a very old and important building located at 142-144 Bridge Street in Muswellbrook, New South Wales, Australia. It was built way back in 1838! This building used to be a home, but now it is a restaurant.

Loxton House is listed on the New South Wales State Heritage Register. This means it is a special place that is protected because of its history and unique design. It was added to this list on 2 April 1999.

The Story of Loxton House

In January 1980, the local council in Muswellbrook asked for advice about making changes to Loxton House. They wanted to know what the Heritage Council thought. The Heritage Council is a group that helps protect important historical places.

In March 1980, the Heritage Council suggested that a special rule, called an Interim Conservation Order, should be put on the building. They were worried that following all the regular building rules might damage the building's original look. They believed it was more important to keep the building's unique design safe.

After getting approval from the Minister for Local Government, the Interim Heritage Order was placed on Loxton House. This temporary protection helped keep the building safe. Because Loxton House was so important, a Permanent Conservation Order was put in place on 8 January 1982. This made its protection permanent. Later, on 2 April 1999, it was officially moved to the New South Wales State Heritage Register.

What Loxton House Looks Like

Loxton House is a two-story building. The front of the building, called the facade, is made of stone. It has special stone blocks at the corners called quoins. There is also an upper verandah (a covered porch) supported by fancy wooden columns.

The side walls of the house are made of brick covered in a smooth plaster, called stucco. The back wall is painted brick. The back of the house also has a two-story verandah, just like the front. The roof is made of iron, but it used to be made of wooden shingles.

Inside, many of the original wooden parts are still there. This includes a beautiful staircase made of cedar wood with a carved handrail. The floors are made of timber boards that were cut by hand.

How Loxton House Has Changed

Loxton House has had some major changes over the years:

  • In 1980, the building was restored and changed to be used as a restaurant in the basement. Shops were added on the ground floor, and offices were put on the first floor.
  • In 1987, permission was given to repave the basement courtyard.
  • In 1992, approval was given to fix the wooden posts and repaint the outside of the building.
