Early Life and Political Journey
Lubomír Štrougal was born in a town called Veselí nad Lužnicí on October 19, 1924. During World War II, he had to work in German factories. After the war, he studied law at Charles University in Prague.
Štrougal joined the Communist Party of Czechoslovakia. In the late 1950s, he became a member of its main leadership group, called the Central Committee. He held several important jobs in the government. From 1959 to 1961, he was the minister for agriculture. After that, he became the interior minister until 1965.
In 1968, he became a deputy prime minister. This was under the leadership of Oldřich Černík. At first, he did not agree with the invasion of Czechoslovakia in 1968. This invasion was carried out by forces from the Warsaw Pact countries. However, he later became a key figure in the government led by Gustáv Husák.
Prime Minister of Czechoslovakia
Lubomír Štrougal served as Czechoslovakia’s prime minister for a long time. He held this position from January 28, 1970, until October 12, 1988. He decided to step down from his role as prime minister because he had disagreements with the leader of the communist party, Miloš Jakeš. Štrougal openly talked about problems within the party and the country.
During the Velvet Revolution in 1989, which was a peaceful change in government, Štrougal was considered for a leadership role in the Communist Party. However, he soon left politics completely. In February 1990, he was officially removed from the party.
