The Lucian Newhall House is a beautiful old home located in Lynn, Massachusetts. It was built in 1866 for Lucian Newhall, who was an important businessman in the area.

This house is a great example of a building style called Second Empire architecture. Because of its history and unique design, it was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1985. Later, in 1996, it also became part of the Diamond Historic District.

About This Historic House

The Lucian Newhall House stands in a special part of Lynn called the Diamond District. This area was once home to many important and wealthy families in the city. The house is located at the corner of Nahant and Ocean Streets. It has fancy designs on both sides that face these streets.

Design and Features

This house is a two-and-a-half-story building made of wood. It has a unique roof style called a mansard roof, which looks like it flares out at the bottom. Right in the middle of the roof, there's a square tower called a cupola. This cupola has three round-arch windows on each side. It also has a wide, sloped roof with decorative brackets.

The corners of the house have wooden blocks that look like stone, called quoining. The edges of the roof, like those on the cupola, are also decorated with fancy brackets. The front of the house on Nahant Street has three main sections. There are projecting sections on either side of the main entrance. The entrance itself has a very detailed porch. This porch connects to the roofs of the side sections and has another projecting part on top.

The windows on the roof, called dormers, have fancy frames around their round-arch windows. The middle dormer even has a double window that is set back a bit. The side of the house facing Ocean Street has a similar design. However, its ground-floor sections are rectangular, and its three roof dormers all look the same.

Lucian Newhall's Story

The Lucian Newhall House was finished in 1866. It was built for Lucian Newhall, who was born on October 14, 1824, and passed away on May 17, 1898. His family were some of the very first people to settle in Lynn.

Lucian Newhall was a pioneer in the shoe business in Lynn. He opened one of the first shoe factories in the city's main business area in 1847. He continued to work in the shoe industry until 1875. His house is one of the most eye-catching buildings in the entire Diamond District.
