Luciana Paula Aymar is an amazing retired field hockey player from Argentina. She was born on August 10, 1977. Many people think she is the best female hockey player ever!

Luciana is the only player in history to win the FIH Player of the Year Award eight times. This award is a huge honor in field hockey. She was also given the Platinum Konex Award in 2010. This award recognized her as the best hockey player in Argentina over the past ten years.

People often compared Luciana's skills to the famous Argentine footballer Diego Maradona. She was known for her incredible speed and dribbling skills. Because of her amazing talent, she earned nicknames like "La Maga" (which means "The Magician") and "The Maradona of Field Hockey."

Luciana had the special honor of being the flag bearer for Argentina at the 2012 Summer Olympics. This meant she led her country's team during the opening ceremony.

Luciana Aymar's Hockey Journey

Luciana started playing field hockey when she was just seven years old. She played for Club Atlético Fisherton in her hometown of Rosario. Six years later, she moved to Jockey Club de Rosario.

Joining the National Team

As she got older, Luciana began training with Argentina's junior national team. This meant she had to travel to Buenos Aires every day! In 1997, she helped the Argentina junior team win the Pan American Games Junior Championship. They also won a bronze medal at the Hockey Junior World Cup that same year.

A year later, in 1998, Luciana joined the senior Argentina team. She was only 16 years old when she first joined the squad, making her the youngest Argentine player to be accepted. Her first big tournament with the senior team was the 1998 Hockey World Cup, where her team finished fourth.

Playing for Clubs Around the World

Luciana also played for different clubs during her career. She played for Rot Weiss Köln in Germany and Real Club de Barcelona in Spain. In Argentina, she played for Quilmes Atlético Club and GEBA. With GEBA, she won important titles like La Liga Nacional (The National League) and the Torneo Metropolitano.

Winning Big with Argentina

Luciana was part of a very successful time for Argentine field hockey. Her team started winning many international tournaments from 1999 onwards. This included four Olympic medals and six Champions Trophies.

She was a key player when Argentina won the Hockey World Cup twice: in 2002 and again in 2010. The 2010 World Cup was extra special because it was held in her hometown of Rosario!

Luciana Aymar was born to René Aymar and Nilda Vicente de Aymar. She has three brothers and sisters. Since 2017, Luciana has been in a relationship with Fernando González, who was a professional tennis player from Chile. They have two children together: a son born in 2019 and a daughter born in 2021.
