Luciana Paula Aymar (Spanish pronunciation: [luˈsjana ajˈmaɾ]; born August 10, 1977) is an amazing retired field hockey player from Argentina. Many people think she is the best female hockey player ever! She's the only player in history to win the FIH Player of the Year Award eight times. That's a lot! In 2010, she also received a special Platinum Konex Award for being the best hockey player in Argentina over the past ten years.
Luciana was famous for her incredible speed and dribbling skills. She could easily get past opposing players, just like the famous Argentine footballer Diego Maradona. Because of her amazing talent, people called her "La Maga" (which means "The Magician") and "The Maradona of Field Hockey."
She was chosen to be the flag bearer for Argentina at the 2012 Summer Olympics. This was a huge honor!

Luciana's Hockey Career
Starting Young in Field Hockey
Luciana started playing field hockey when she was just seven years old. She played for Club Atlético Fisherton in her hometown of Rosario. Six years later, she moved to Jockey Club de Rosario. She began training with the junior national team, which meant traveling to Buenos Aires every day.
Playing for Clubs and Country
In her international career, Luciana played for clubs like Rot Weiss Köln in Germany and Real Club de Barcelona in Spain. In Argentina, she played for Quilmes Atlético Club and GEBA. With GEBA, she helped her team win the National League (La Liga Nacional) and the Metropolitan Tournament (Torneo Metropolitano).
In 1997, Luciana was part of the Argentina junior team that won the Pan American Games Junior Championship. They also earned a bronze medal at the Hockey Junior World Cup that same year. Just a year later, when she was only 16, she joined the Argentina senior team. She was the youngest player to be accepted into the squad at that time! Her first big tournament with the senior team was the 1998 Women's Hockey World Cup, where they finished fourth.
Winning Big with Argentina
Luciana was a key player in a special generation of Argentine field hockey players. This team started winning many international tournaments from the 1999 Pan American Games onwards. They won four Olympic medals and six Champions Trophies.
She was part of the team that won the 2002 and 2010 Hockey World Cups. The 2010 World Cup was extra special because it was held in her hometown of Rosario!
A Hockey Legend
In 2008, the International Hockey Federation officially named Luciana a Legend of Hockey. This shows how important and skilled she was in the sport.
Luciana had the honor of being the flag bearer for Argentina at the opening ceremony of the 2007 Pan American Games in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil. She also carried the flag at the London 2012 Summer Olympics. At the 2012 Olympics, Luciana became only the second Argentine athlete to win four Olympic medals. The first was sportsman Carlos Espínola.
Luciana played her very last international game for Argentina on December 7, 2014. This final game was in Mendoza, Argentina, and she ended her career by winning her sixth Champions Trophy.
