Luciana's Political Journey
Starting Her Career in Politics
Luciana began her political life in the student movement in Porto Alegre. She was part of a group within the Workers' Party (PT) at that time. In 1994, when she was 23, she was elected as a state deputy for the first time. She was re-elected in 1998, getting twice as many votes.
As a state deputy, she became known for speaking out against problems in public services. She also supported teachers, students, and workers in their efforts to improve things.
Becoming a Federal Deputy and Founding PSOL
In 2002, Luciana was elected as a federal deputy for the first time. This was the same year that Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva became President. Early in the new government, Luciana disagreed with some of the Workers' Party's plans, especially about changes to pensions in 2003.
She voted against these changes and was later removed from the party. After this, she joined Heloísa Helena and other deputies to start a new party. This new party became the Socialism and Freedom Party (PSOL) in 2005.
The next year, she was re-elected as a federal deputy, now representing PSOL. During her time as a federal deputy, she focused on laws about the economy. For example, she worked on ideas for taxing large fortunes. In 2008, she ran for mayor of Porto Alegre and came in fourth place.
Presidential Campaign and Recent Elections
Luciana ran for President of Brazil in the 2014 elections. During her campaign, she talked about making big changes to Brazil's economy and political system. She also supported civil rights and freedoms. She finished the election in 4th place, with over 1.6 million votes.
In 2016, Luciana Genro ran for mayor of Porto Alegre again. She finished that election in 5th place. In 2018, some people in PSOL wanted her to run for President once more. However, she decided not to, and Guilherme Boulos became the party's candidate. Instead, Luciana was elected as a state deputy for Rio Grande do Sul in the Brazilian General Election.
Luciana's Family Life
Luciana Genro is the daughter of Tarso Genro and Sandra Krebs. Even though they have different political ideas, Luciana has a good relationship with her family. Her grandfather, Adelmo Simas Genro, was a member of a historical political party and died during the military dictatorship. Her uncle, Adelmo Genro Filho, was a journalist.
Luciana Genro has one son, Fernando Marcel Genro Robaina, who was born in 1988. Fernando's father is Roberto Robaina, who is also involved with the PSOL party. Luciana and Roberto lived together for about three and a half years before separating in 1991. She later married journalist Sérgio Bueno in 1997.
