Kids Encyclopedia Facts

Lucky Valley is a fascinating ghost town located in Woodbury County, within the state of Iowa. A ghost town is a place that used to be a busy town or city, but now very few or no people live there.

What Happened to Lucky Valley?

Lucky Valley was once a small, active community. A post office, which was very important for sending and receiving mail and connecting people, was set up in Lucky Valley in 1882. This post office helped the town grow and stay connected for many years.

However, things started to change when the railroad was built nearby. Railroads were like the highways of their time, and they helped towns grow by making it easier to transport goods and people. But sometimes, if a town wasn't directly on the railroad line, its businesses would move to a new town that was closer to the tracks.

This is what happened to Lucky Valley. When the railroad was built, many businesses and people moved to a nearby town called Anthon, which was on the new railroad line. As people left, the population of Lucky Valley slowly became smaller and smaller. The post office eventually closed in 1903 because there weren't enough people living there to keep it busy.

Today, you won't find many buildings left in Lucky Valley. However, a cemetery still marks the spot where the town once stood. It serves as a quiet reminder of the community that used to thrive there.
