Studying in Greece

After college, Lucy continued her learning at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, Greece. She studied there from 1929 to 1934. This school is a famous place where people go to learn about ancient Greece.

Teaching and Research

From 1937 to 1950, Lucy Meritt taught at Mount Holyoke College. She also received special fellowships twice from the American Academy in Rome. This allowed her to do important research.

She worked at ancient sites like Cosa in Italy and Serra Orlando (Morgantina) in Sicily. These were places where archaeologists dug up old cities and learned about how people lived long ago.

Later Career and Awards

In 1964, she married Benjamin Dean Meritt. In 1972, she moved to Austin, Texas, with her husband. She became a Visiting Scholar at the University of Texas at Austin. She continued to work there until she passed away.

In 1977, Lucy Meritt received a very special award. It was the Gold Medal Award for Distinguished Archaeological Achievement. This award recognized her amazing work in archaeology.
