Early Life and Beginnings
Lucy grew up in Igloolik, a community in Nunavut, Canada. Her journey into the arts began there.
A Star on Screen: Acting Career
Lucy became famous for her role in the 2001 movie Atanarjuat: The Fast Runner. For her amazing performance, she won the Best Actress award at the American Indian Film Festival. Later, in 2015, she also acted in the film Maliglutit.
Behind the Camera: Directing Films
In 2017, Lucy directed her very first full-length movie, Tia and Piujuq. This film was special because her own daughter played the main character, Piujuq.
Lucy also worked with Carol Kunnuk on another film. They co-directed, co-wrote, and co-starred in Tautuktavuk (What We See). This movie was shown for the first time at the Toronto International Film Festival in 2023. It won an important award called the Amplify Voices Award for Best First Film.
Sharing Culture Through Music and TV
Besides acting and directing, Lucy is a skilled throat singer. This is a special type of singing from the Inuit culture. She uses her voice to share her culture and beliefs. For example, in 2014, she chose not to perform for a politician. This was her way of showing concern about government actions. She also wore seal skin at a show to support Inuit traditions.
Lucy is a leader at the Nunavut Independent Television Network. This network is part of Isuma, a media company in Igloolik. In 2021, Isuma started Uvagut TV. This is a 24/7 online channel that shows programs only in the Inuktitut language. Lucy is the managing director for Uvagut TV. She believes the channel helps keep the Inuit language and culture alive and strong.
