King Lud facts for kids

Lud was a legendary king of Britain from a long time ago, even before the Romans arrived. His story comes from old books like History of the Kings of Britain by Geoffrey of Monmouth. People say he founded the city of London and was buried at a place called Ludgate.
Lud was the oldest son of King Heli. When his father passed away, Lud became king. Later, his brother Caswallon took over the throne after Lud. You might hear Lud's name in words like Ludgate, Ned Ludd, and even 'luddite'.
Lud's Story in Ancient Texts
King Lud's time as ruler is famous for building many cities. He especially loved Trinovantum, which is what London was called back then. He made it stronger and more beautiful. Geoffrey of Monmouth wrote that the name "London" came from "Caer Lud," meaning "Lud's Fortress."
When King Lud died, he was buried at Ludgate. His two sons, Androgeus and Tenvantius, were too young to rule. So, his brother Cassibelanus became the next king.
In some old Welsh stories, Lud is called Lludd fab Beli. There's a special Welsh tale called Cyfranc Lludd a Llefelys (The Tale of Lludd and Llefelys). This story is sometimes found in a collection called the Mabinogion. It tells us that Lludd had another brother named Llefelys, who became king of France. While Lludd ruled Britain, three big problems hit the land. But with his brother's smart advice, Lludd was able to solve them all.
Lud and the City of London
Many people believe that Lud's name is where Ludgate comes from. Ludgate was a very important entrance into the City of London. Some even thought London itself was named after him. However, the real meaning of Ludgate comes from an old English word, "hlid-geat." This word simply means a "postern" or a "swing gate."
Today, you can still see old statues of King Lud and his two sons. These statues used to stand on the old Ludgate. Now, they are in the porch of St Dunstan-in-the-West Church on Fleet Street in London. There was once a pub at Ludgate Circus called "King Lud." It's now a restaurant, but you can still spot medallions of King Lud on its roof and above the doors.
