Ludwig von Sybel was born in a town called Marburg in Hesse, Germany. His father was Heinrich von Sybel. Ludwig went to college at the University of Göttingen and the University of Bonn.
After his studies, he became a professor at the University of Marburg. In 1877, he started as an associate professor of archaeology. This means he was a junior professor. By 1888, he became a full professor, which is a more senior teaching position. Later, in 1906, he was chosen to be the rector of the university. The rector is like the main leader or president of a university.
Ludwig von Sybel loved to travel for his work. He visited many important places to study ancient history. He went to Italy in 1871 and 1872. He also traveled to Paris and Greece in 1879 and 1880. Later, in 1886, he visited England. These trips helped him learn more about ancient cultures and art.
