Lugros is a small town, also called a municipality, in southeastern Spain. It is located in the province of Granada. The town sits on the northern side of the Sierra Nevada mountains. Local people sometimes call its valley the "Valley of the aim of the World." A large part of Lugros is inside the Sierra Nevada National Park. This park is home to many special plants that grow only in this area.
A Look at Lugros's History
It's a bit tricky to know exactly when Lugros started. There aren't many old records about it. This might be because it was one of the last towns in this mountain region. Some people think Lugros began during the time of the Mozárabes. These were Christians who lived under Muslim rule in Spain. Others believe the town is even older.
Early Discoveries and Names
After the Christian reconquest of Spain, new Christian settlers moved to the area. During the time of the Nasrid kingdom, Lugros was a small farm area. It was linked to a nearby town called Beas de Guadix.
Archaeologists have found old metal items in the region. These show that people lived and worked here a long time ago. You can still see the ruins of an old blacksmith shop today.
The name "Lugros" comes from a Latin word, "lupus," which means "wolf." Wolves were likely common in the area long ago. Over time, the name changed from "luberos" and "lubros" to "Lugros." People from Lugros are called "lugreños."
