Luhrig had a post office that opened in 1900. This post office helped people send and receive mail. However, it closed down just 16 years later, in 1916.
Originally, Luhrig was a busy place because of mining. It was known as a mining community. A company called the Luhrig Coal Company operated coal mines there. These mines were important for getting coal, which was used for energy and heating.
