Luigi De Magistris (born February 23, 1926 – died February 16, 2022) was an important leader in the Catholic Church from Italy. He worked for the Church for over 40 years in the Roman Curia, which is like the central government of the Catholic Church. From 2001 to 2003, he was the Pro-Major Penitentiary, a high-ranking job in the Apostolic Penitentiary. This office deals with special Church matters like forgiveness. He became a bishop in 1996, an archbishop in 2001, and a cardinal in 2015.

Life of Luigi De Magistris

Luigi De Magistris was born on February 23, 1926, in Cagliari, a city on the island of Sardinia, Italy. He was the youngest of eight children. His father, Edmondo de Magistris, was a well-known doctor.

Early Education and Priesthood

Luigi studied at the University of Cagliari. After that, he went to the Pontifical Roman Major Seminary to study for the priesthood. On April 12, 1952, he became a priest for the Roman Catholic Archdiocese of Cagliari.

For the next five years, he worked as a parish priest in Cagliari. He also served on the Church's local court. Later, he continued his studies at the Pontifical Lateran University.

Working in the Roman Curia

In October 1958, Luigi De Magistris began working in the Roman Curia. This is the central administration of the Catholic Church. He first worked as a secretary at the Lateran Athenaeum.

From 1959 to 1969, he worked in the Congregation for the Doctrine of the Faith. This office helps protect Catholic teachings. During this time, he worked with Cardinal Alfredo Ottaviani during the Second Vatican Council. This was a very important meeting that updated the Catholic Church. After that, he spent ten years working with the Council for the Public Affairs of the Church.

Becoming a Bishop and Archbishop

In April 1979, he was given a high position in the Apostolic Penitentiary. This office handles matters of conscience and forgiveness within the Church. He became the regent, which is the second-highest role there.

On March 6, 1996, Pope John Paul II named him a Titular Bishop of Nova. This means he was given the title of bishop for a historical diocese that no longer exists. He was consecrated as a bishop on April 28, 1996, by Cardinal Giovanni Canestri.

On November 22, 2001, he was appointed Pro-Major Penitentiary. This meant he was in charge of the Apostolic Penitentiary. At the same time, he was raised to the rank of archbishop. He also became a member of the Congregation for Divine Worship and the Discipline of the Sacraments in 2002. In 2003, he joined the Pontifical Commission Ecclesia Dei.

However, he was replaced in his role at the Penitentiary quite quickly. On October 4, 2003, Pope John Paul II sent him into retirement. Cardinal James Stafford took over his position.

Becoming a Cardinal

On January 4, 2015, Pope Francis announced that he would make De Magistris a cardinal. This was a big surprise to De Magistris himself. He heard the news while hearing confessions in the Cathedral of Cagliari.

On February 14, 2015, he officially became a cardinal. He was named a Cardinal-Deacon of the church of Santissimi Nomi di Gesù e Maria in Via Lata in Rome.

Later Life and Death

After retiring, he continued to help in churches in Rome until 2010. Then, he moved back to Cagliari for health reasons.

Luigi De Magistris passed away in Cagliari on February 16, 2022. He was 95 years old.
