Luis Díez de Aux y Armendáriz was an important Spanish church leader and politician. He was born around 1571 in Quito, Ecuador, and passed away in Barcelona on January 3, 1627.

His Life and Career

Early Life and Family

Luis's family came from regions in Spain called Navarra and Aragón. However, Luis was born far away in Quito, Ecuador. His father, Lope Díez Aux de Armendáriz, was the president of the Real Audiencia de Quito there. Luis also had an older brother, Lope Díez de Armendáriz. His brother later became the first Marquess of Cadreita and a Viceroy of New Spain.

Becoming a Church Leader

Luis moved to Spain and became a Cistercian monk. He joined the monastery of Valparaíso de Zamora. In 1613, a powerful leader named the Duke of Lerma chose him to be the abbot of the monastery of Santa María de la Oliva in Navarra. This happened because Luis's brother had served the King well.

Important Roles

Luis continued to rise in the church. He became the bishop of Jaca in 1618. Then, in 1622, he became the Bishop of Urgell. As the Bishop of Urgell, he also held a special role as a co-prince of Andorra. This meant he shared leadership of Andorra with King Louis XIII of France.

In 1626, King Felipe IV appointed Luis as the viceroy of Catalonia. A viceroy was like a governor who ruled a region in the king's name. Luis was also going to become the Archbishop of Tarragona. Sadly, he passed away in January 1627 before he could take on this new role.
