Luis Ángel González Macchi was a politician from Paraguay. He was born on December 13, 1947. He served as the 46th President of Paraguay from 1999 to 2003. He became president in a special way. He was not chosen by voters in an election. Instead, he took office after some important political events. At that time, he was the leader of the Senate. He was a member of the Colorado Party. Before becoming president, he worked in both parts of the Paraguayan Congress.
How He Became President
Luis González Macchi was the President of the Paraguayan Senate from 1998 to 1999. In March 1999, the Vice President, Luis María Argaña, passed away. This led to a big political situation. The President at the time, Raúl Cubas, faced questions about the event. Because of this, the Chamber of Deputies, which is part of the Congress, started a process to remove him. This process is called impeachment.
President Cubas decided to resign on March 29, 1999. Since González Macchi was the President of the Senate, he was next in line. So, he became the new President of Paraguay.
His Time as President
As president, González Macchi tried to bring different political groups together. He wanted them to work as a team. This was to help Paraguay's economy and solve political problems. He formed a "coalition government." This means different parties worked together.
However, this team-up did not last long. One major party left the group in 2000. This meant González Macchi no longer had a majority of support in the legislature. The legislature is the group that makes laws. It became hard for him to pass new laws. The country's economy also faced challenges.
During his presidency, there were attempts to remove him from office. There was a coup attempt in 2000. A coup is when a group tries to take control of the government by force. There was also another impeachment attempt in 2001. But both of these attempts failed.
González Macchi stayed in office until the next elections in 2003. He could not run for president again. The country's rules say a president cannot be re-elected, even if they served only part of a term. Nicanor Duarte won the 2003 election. González Macchi left office on August 15, 2003.
