Luis Mariano de Larra y Wetoret (born in 1830 in Madrid, Spain – died in 1901 in Madrid) was a Spanish writer. He was the son of a very famous journalist named Mariano José de Larra.
Luis Mariano de Larra is most famous for writing the words (called a libretto) for many zarzuelas. A zarzuela is a special Spanish musical play that mixes singing and spoken parts. Some of his zarzuelas include El Toro y el Tigre and Un embuste y una boda. His most well-known work is El barberillo de Lavapiés (1874), which had music written by Francisco Asenjo Barbieri.
Larra also worked for the government in a department called the Ministry of Development. This department helped with public services. He also wrote for different newspapers and magazines, like the Gaceta de Madrid. Later, he left his government job to focus completely on writing.
He wrote many comedies, which are plays meant to be funny or light-hearted. One of his very successful plays was La oración de la tarde. This was a serious play (a drama) with three acts, written in verse. It was about a character named Don Diego de Mendoza who learns to forgive others, even when he feels wronged. The play first opened at the Teatro del Circo on November 25, 1858, and was very popular.
