Early Life and Education
Luis Solana was born in Madrid, Spain, on 18 December 1935. He is the older brother of Javier Solana, who is also a famous politician. Luis studied law at the Complutense University of Madrid. After that, he went on to study economics in both London and Paris.
Political Beginnings
During his time as a student, Luis Solana was part of a group called the University Socialist Grouping. Because of his political activities, he was put in jail in 1959. This happened during the time when Spain was ruled by a government known as the Francoist dictatorship.
Family Life
Luis Solana married Leonor Pérez Pita. She was often called 'Cuca Solana'. Leonor was very important in the world of Spanish fashion. She helped start the Madrid Fashion Week, which is a big event for fashion designers. Luis Solana became a widower in 2019 when Leonor passed away.
Career in Politics
Luis Solana was a member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). This is one of the main political parties in Spain. He was chosen by voters to be a member of the Congress of Deputies. This is like the parliament or main law-making body in Spain.
He represented the area of Segovia. He was first elected in 1977. People voted for him again in 1979 and 1982, so he served for several years. In 1985, he also joined a group called the Trilateral Commission, which brings together leaders from different parts of the world.
Career in Business
Beyond politics, Luis Solana had a successful career in business. From 1982 to 1989, he was the chairman of Telefónica. This is a very large telecommunications company in Spain. After that, he became the Director-General of RTVE. This is the public broadcasting service in Spain, which includes TV and radio.
Later, in 1991, he became the chairman of a company called Inversiones Graminsa, S.A. He also joined the board of directors for another company, Amper, in 2004.
