Luis Solana Madariaga (born 18 December 1935) is a Spanish businessman and politician. He has held important roles in both government and business in Spain.

Early Life and Education

Luis Solana was born in Madrid, Spain, on December 18, 1935. He is the older brother of Javier Solana, who is also a well-known Spanish politician.

Luis Solana studied law at the Complutense University of Madrid. After finishing his law degree, he continued his studies in economics. He went to London and Paris to learn more about this subject.

During his time as a student, Luis Solana was part of a group called the University Socialist Grouping (ASU). Because of his political activities, he was arrested and jailed in 1959. This happened during the time when Spain was ruled by a strict government known as the Francoist dictatorship.

Family Life

Luis Solana was married to Leonor Pérez Pita, who was often called 'Cuca Solana'. She was a very important person in the world of Spanish fashion. Cuca Solana helped start the famous Pasarela Cibeles, which is a big event where fashion designers show their new collections. Luis Solana became a widower in 2019 when his wife passed away.

Political Career

Luis Solana is a member of the Spanish Socialist Workers' Party (PSOE). This is one of the main political parties in Spain.

He was elected to the Congress of Deputies several times. The Congress of Deputies is like the parliament in Spain, where laws are made. He represented the area of Segovia.

From 1982 to 1989, he was the chairman of Telefónica. This is one of the largest telecommunications companies in the world.

In 1989, he was appointed as the Director-General of RTVE. RTVE is Spain's public radio and television broadcasting company.

Later, in 1991, he became the chairman of a company called Inversiones Graminsa, S.A. He also joined the board of directors of another company, Amper, in 2004.
