Lluïsa Casagemas i Coll (born December 13, 1873) was a talented musician from Barcelona, Spain. She was a violinist, a singer, and a composer. A composer is someone who writes music. Lluïsa started writing music when she was quite young. In 1893, she showed her first major piece, a symphonic poem, to the public. A symphonic poem is a piece of music for an orchestra that tells a story or describes something.

Lluïsa studied music composition and learned to play the violin with famous teachers of her time. She was known for her amazing musical skills.

A Prize-Winning Opera

Lluïsa Casagemas wrote an opera called Schiava e regina, which means Slave and Queen. An opera is a play where the story is told mostly through singing, with music played by an orchestra. This opera won a special award at a big event in Chicago, USA, in 1892.

Her opera was supposed to be performed in 1893 at the Gran Teatre del Liceu in Barcelona. This would have been a huge moment! It would have been the first time an opera written by a woman was performed there. However, an unexpected event caused the theater to close for many months. Because of this, her opera could not be performed as planned.

To make up for this, parts of her opera were played for the Spanish royal family in Madrid in 1894. The royal family includes the king, queen, and their close relatives. Even though it was a special performance, the full opera was never performed or recorded after that. It was sadly forgotten over time.

Musical Gatherings

After these events, Lluïsa Casagemas often sang her own songs at special gatherings. These gatherings were held at the home of a famous writer named Emilia Pardo Bazán. These events were called "salons." A salon was a place where important people, like artists, writers, and musicians, would meet to share ideas and enjoy performances.

Emilia Pardo Bazán helped Lluïsa meet many important people in the music and literature world. This helped Lluïsa share her music with more people.

Her Musical Creations

Lluïsa Casagemas wrote many different kinds of music. She composed sacred works, which are pieces for religious services. She also wrote instrumental works, which are pieces for musical instruments without singing. And, of course, she wrote several songs.

Some of her known works include:

  • Crepusculo (meaning Twilight) for orchestra (1893)
  • Schiava e regina, her famous opera (written between 1879 and 1881)
  • I briganti; Montserrat, another opera (Opus 227)
