Later, his father worked for the Swiss Post. Both his mother and father were creative, and this talent passed on to Lukas and his younger brother, Jürg. Jürg became a journalist.
Lukas Hartmann started writing his first stories when he was just 13 years old. He studied to become a teacher in Bern. He focused on German, history, and music. After teaching for a while, he decided to study psychology. He also worked as a social worker and a journalist before becoming a full-time writer.

Family Life
Since 1996, Lukas Hartmann has been married to Simonetta Sommaruga. She is a well-known Swiss politician. She served as a Federal Councillor, which is like a government minister in Switzerland. In late 2022, she announced she would step down from her role. This decision was made because Lukas Hartmann had a stroke and needed her support.
Supporting Important Causes
Lukas Hartmann's grandmother was one of the "Verdingkinder". These were children in Switzerland who were taken from their families and sent to live with other families, often as unpaid workers. This was a difficult time for many children. Because of his family's history, Lukas Hartmann strongly supports the "Wiedergutmachungsinitiative". This initiative aims to help and recognize the people who were affected by these past practices.
