Lukas Hartmann (born August 29, 1944, originally named Hans-Rudolf Lehmann) is a famous Swiss writer. He is well-known for his novels and especially for his children's books.

About Lukas Hartmann
Early Life and Education
Lukas Hartmann was born in Bern, Switzerland. His mother was a farmer's daughter, and his father worked for the Swiss Post. Both his parents were very creative, and this artistic side was passed on to Lukas and his younger brother, Jürg. Lukas started writing his own stories when he was just 13 years old!
He studied to become a teacher in Bern. He focused on German, history, and music. After teaching for a while, he decided to study psychology. Later, he worked as a social worker and a journalist before becoming a full-time writer.
His Books and Films
Lukas Hartmann has written many popular books. Some of his novels, like Anna - annA and Pestalozzis Berg, have even been made into movies! This shows how much people enjoy his stories.
One of his historical novels, Ein Bild von Lydia, was published in 2018. It tells the story of Lydia Welti-Escher, an important Swiss woman.
Family and Public Life
Since 1996, Lukas Hartmann has been married to Simonetta Sommaruga. She is a very important politician in Switzerland. She used to be a member of the Swiss government, known as the Federal Council.
In late 2022, Lukas Hartmann had a stroke. Because of this, his wife, Simonetta Sommaruga, decided to step down from her role in the government to support him.
Supporting Important Causes
Lukas Hartmann's grandmother was one of the Verdingkinder. These were children in Switzerland who were taken from their families and sent to live and work on farms or with other families, often in difficult conditions. Because of his family's history, Lukas Hartmann strongly supports the Wiedergutmachungsinitiative. This is an effort to help and recognize the people who were affected by the Verdingkinder system.
