Lund's Tower

Lund's Tower is a cool stone tower found near a village called Sutton-in-Craven in North Yorkshire, England. People also know it by other names like Cowling Pinnacle or Sutton Pinnacle. Sometimes, with another nearby tower, they are called the Salt and Pepper Pots! This tower is considered a "folly," which is a building built just for fun or decoration, not for living in. It's also listed as a Grade II historic building, meaning it's important and protected.

Discovering Lund's Tower's Past

James Lund, a wealthy businessman, had this tower built in 1887. He hired architects from a company called R. B. Broster & Sons to design it. There are a few stories about why he built it!

Why Was the Tower Built?

Some local people call it the Ethel Tower. They believe it was built to celebrate the birth of his daughter, Ethel, or maybe her 21st birthday. Others call it the Jubilee Tower. They think it was built to remember Queen Victoria's Jubilee in 1887, which was a big celebration. It is also known as Sutton Pinnacle.

James Lund's Life

James Lund was the son of William Lund. His family owned a big company that made textiles, which are fabrics and clothes. In 1852, James Lund married Mary Sarah Spencer. Her father, William Spencer, was also a very rich landowner. James Lund owned other large homes, like Malsis Hall and Ellerton Hall. He even built a new Malsis Hall in 1862. This hall later became Malsis School in 1920.

The Salt and Pepper Pots

Lund's Tower sits on top of Earl Crag. Close by is another tower called Wainman's Pinnacle. This other tower was built in 1898. It was made to remember the Napoleonic Wars. Because they are so close and look a bit similar, these two towers are often called the Salt and Pepper Pots by people living nearby.

A Protected Landmark

Lund's Tower was officially recognized as a Grade II listed building in October 1984. This means it's an important historical structure. It is protected to make sure it stays standing for many years to come.

What Lund's Tower Looks Like

Lund's Tower is about eleven meters tall, which is like a three-story building! It is made from carefully cut stone blocks.

Tower Features

At the very top, the tower has special battlements. These are like the decorative walls you might see on an old castle. There is also a base at the bottom of the tower. You can find a plaque on the tower, but it's too old to read what it says.

Inside the Tower

If you go inside, you will find a spiral staircase made of stone. It has thirty-nine steps! When you reach the top, there is a viewing platform. From here, you can enjoy the views of the surrounding area.
