Lund is a historic city in southern Sweden. It's located in the Scania province, very close to Copenhagen, Denmark. Lund is home to about 94,000 people.

This city is super old! Archeologists think Lund was founded around the year 990. Back then, Scania was part of Denmark. Lund became a very important church center in 1103. The amazing Lund Cathedral, built between 1090 and 1145, is still a main landmark in the city center.

Sweden took control of Lund from Denmark in 1658. This happened after a peace agreement called the Treaty of Roskilde.

Lund University, started in 1666, is one of the oldest and biggest universities in Scandinavia. The university buildings are a big part of the city. Because of the university, Lund has become a hub for cool high-tech companies.

Discovering Lund's Past

Lund is often called one of the oldest cities in Sweden. Its beginnings are a bit of a mystery, but it was likely around by the end of the Viking Age. For a long time, people thought the city was founded around 1020. This was believed to be by Danish kings Sweyn I Forkbeard or his son Canute the Great.

However, recent digs by archeologists show that the first settlement was probably around 990. It might have been people moving from an even older place called Uppåkra. Uppåkra dates back to the first century BC! King Sweyn I Forkbeard moved Lund to its current spot, about 5 kilometers away. The new location was on a hill near a river crossing. This made it much easier to defend than Uppåkra, which was on a flat plain.

The Danish church became very organized under King Canute the Great. Lund became an important church city in 1048. By 1104, it was an archbishopric, meaning it was the main church center for all of Scandinavia, even Greenland!

The Lund Cathedral School was founded in 1085 by the Danish king Canute the Saint. This is the oldest school in Scandinavia and one of the oldest in Northern Europe! Many famous people went to school here, like actor Max von Sydow.

Lund became part of Sweden in 1658. But Denmark tried to get it back in 1676 during the Scanian War. A very bloody battle, the Battle of Lund, happened just north of the city. Sweden won, and its control over Lund was confirmed in later peace agreements.

The first university in Scandinavia, the Academy of Lund, was founded in the 1400s. But it closed down in 1537. The current Lund University was started in 1666.

During World War II in 1943, a British plane accidentally bombed Lund. Luckily, no one died, though some people were hurt by glass.

Over the last 50 years, Lund's population has more than doubled. This is mainly because of the university and the growth of high-tech companies. For example, Tetra Pak, a company that makes food packaging, started in Lund in 1952.

Lund's Location and Layout

Lund is in Sweden's biggest farming area, in the southwest of Scania. It's less than 10 kilometers from the sandy beaches of the Öresund Strait. The city is built on a hill, rising from the low-lying Höje River in the south to 86 meters above sea level in the north. From the top of Sankt Hans Hill, you can even see Copenhagen, Denmark's capital!

The closest big Swedish city is Malmö, about 15 kilometers southwest. Other Swedish cities like Gothenburg (250 km) and Stockholm (600 km) are further away.

The center of Lund still looks a lot like it did in the Middle Ages. Some buildings from that time are still standing. These include Lund Cathedral, Liberiet, St. Peter's Priory, and Krognoshuset. Many buildings in the center today were built in the late 1800s. Examples are Katedralskolan, the Grand Hotel, and the main university buildings.
