Katedralskolan (Lund Cathedral School) is a well-known school in Lund, Sweden. It was started way back in 1085 by the Danish king Canute the Saint. This makes it the oldest school in all of Scandinavia. It is also one of the oldest schools in Northern Europe.
Even though it's a public school, many students want to attend Lund Cathedral School. Getting accepted can be quite competitive.
A Long History
The school began with a gift from the Danish king Canute the Saint. At first, it was likely a cathedral school. This means it trained priests and other church leaders. Its name comes from these early church connections.
Over the years, the school faced challenges. During wars, it became a very small elementary school. For its first 750 years, the school was right next to the Cathedral in Lund. But in 1837, it moved to a new building. This building, called Viffertska gården, was very important in Lund. The Swedish king Charles XII even lived there for two years in the early 1700s.
Despite many wars and changes between Danish and Swedish rule, the school has taught students continuously since 1085.
School Life Today
Today, the Cathedral School is an Upper Secondary School. In Sweden, this is called a gymnasium. It's like a high school for older teens. About 1400 students attend the school.
Students can choose from seven different study programs:
- The Science Programme (Naturvetenskapsprogrammet)
- The Social Science Programme (Samhällsvetenskapsprogrammet)
- The Lingua Programme (Linguaprogrammet)
- The History Programme (Historieprogrammet)
- The Humanist Programme (Humanistiska programmet)
- The Economy Programme (Ekonomiprogrammet)
- The IB Diploma Programme
The History Programme is special. It started in 2009. It is the only History program of its kind in Sweden.
The school uses six different buildings today. These include the main building and the Charles XII house. Many well-known people have studied here. Famous alumni include actor Max von Sydow. Swedish sports stars Max Salminen and Henrik Stenson also went to this school.
Fun Student Clubs
The school has many student clubs. Two of the oldest and most respected are the theatre club Scenia and the photography club Asarna.
Scenia started in 1945. Actor Max von Sydow was one of the students who helped begin it. The club performed many Swedish plays. This became a tradition that new students continued each year. Scenia was very active in the 1950s. Later, it was restarted as Katterevyn in the 1980s. Today, Katterevyn is a type of comedy show called a Spex. About 150 students work on it every spring.
In 2016, a team from the school won a big award. They were the first team from Scandinavia to win a title in the Varsity Bowl Division. This was at the International History Bee and Bowl European Championships in Berlin.
