Discovering Bjärred's Past
The name Bjärred might come from the Danish word bjerg, which means "height" or "hill." This could refer to how the town looks like it's on a hill when seen from the sea.
How Bjärred Grew
Bjärred started as a popular seaside resort for people from the nearby city of Lund in the 1800s. To make it easier for visitors to come, an 11-kilometer (7-mile) long railway was built between Lund and Bjärred. This railway opened on July 27, 1901.
The railway was updated in 1916 to use electricity. However, it didn't make enough money and eventually closed on June 15, 1939. The tracks were removed the following year.
Bjärred's Population Growth
Since the mid-1900s, Bjärred has grown a lot. In 1960, only 864 people lived there. By 2010, the population had jumped to 9,874 residents! This shows how popular the town has become.
Exploring Bjärred's Geography
Bjärred can be divided into four main areas. These include Löddesnäs in the north-west, Borgeby in the north, Centrum (the central part), and Gamla Bjärred and Haboljung in the south.
A large farm called Bjerehof gave its name to a living area in central Bjärred. It also inspired the names of a school and a sports hall. What is now the town center used to be an orchard called Högsäters orchard, started in the early 1920s.
Nature and the Coastline
Along the beach in Löddesnäs, in northern Bjärred, there's a special nature reserve. Its most interesting feature is a 10–15 meter (33–49 feet) high wall called Littorinavallen. This wall runs right next to the beach.
Above the wall, there's a meadow called Gyllins meadow. It's named after the person who owned a large part of Bjärred in the 1900s. The river Lödde å flows into the Öresund sea just north of Bjärred. You can also find a bird-watching tower there, perfect for spotting different kinds of birds.
The town has a shallow beach on the Öresund, which is great for swimming. There's also a long bathing jetty, stretching 524 meters (1,719 feet), making it one of the longest in Sweden! In 2004, an outdoor swimming area opened at the end of this jetty, which also has a restaurant.
