Lomma (Swedish pronunciation: [ˈlʊ̂mːa]) is a town in Skåne County, Sweden. It's also the main town of Lomma Municipality. In 2020, about 13,772 people lived there.

History of Lomma

Lomma is a very old place! It was first mentioned way back in the year 1085. A famous king named Cnut the Great wrote about it, calling it Lumaby.

Back then, the area around Lund and Dalby was a big cultural center in Skåne. Lomma was a perfect port because it was located at the mouth of the Höje å river. This river was like a highway for boats, connecting Lomma to important places like Uppåkra, Lund, and Dalby.

Lomma even had "city status" for a while, meaning it was an important town. But later, Malmö became more important, and Lomma lost its city status. For a long time, people crossed the Höje å river by ferry. A bridge was finally built in 1682.

Brick and Cement Production

Lomma became known for making bricks. There was already a brickworks in 1682. Then, in 1854, a man named Frans Henrik Kockum started a huge brick factory. It was one of the biggest in Sweden! This factory made over 2.5 million bricks. Because of all these bricks, the harbor in Lomma grew bigger. It was easier to ship the bricks by sea.

The soil around Lomma was also good for making cement. In 1871, a company called Skånska Cement AB started making Portland cement in Lomma. They began production the next year. A key ingredient for cement is lime, which they got from places like Saltholm.

Making bricks and cement was often seasonal work. During the summer, up to 350 people worked at the cement factory. There was also another factory called Lomma Eternit that made asbestos cement. This factory closed in 1977 because some workers became ill due to the materials used there.

Lomma is located on a bay called Lommabukten [sv]. It's situated to the west of the city of Lund and north of Malmö.
