Karl Fredrik Lukas Moodysson (born 17 January 1969) is a Swedish filmmaker and writer. He writes both novels and short storys.

Lukas Moodysson first became known as a talented poet in the 1980s. He became very famous in Sweden and around the world when he directed the romantic film Show Me Love in 1998. Since then, he has made many different kinds of movies that people liked. He also continues to write poetry and novels. In 2007, The Guardian newspaper said he was one of the world's best directors. They described his movies as "honest and strong."

Early Life and Beginnings

Lukas Moodysson was born in Lund, Sweden. He grew up in Åkarp, in Skåne County. He felt a bit different and used poetry to share his feelings. By the time he was 23, he had written five poetry collections and a novel. These were published by a company called Wahlström & Widstrand.

He decided to start making films because he wanted to create works that were more open. He hoped more people would enjoy them than his poetry. After studying at Sweden's main film school, the Dramatiska Institutet, he directed three short films before making longer movies.

Lukas Moodysson's Films

Lukas Moodysson's first feature film was Show Me Love in 1998. It was a love story that felt very real, almost like a documentary. The movie is set in the small town of Åmål, Sweden. It follows two girls who slowly fall in love. The film was very popular with people and movie reviewers in Sweden. It won four Guldbagge Awards, which are like Sweden's Oscars. These awards included best film, best actress (for Rebecka Liljeberg and Alexandra Dahlström), best director, and best script. It was a huge success in Sweden.

His next film, Together (Tillsammans), came out in 2000. This movie showed what life was like in a shared community in suburban Stockholm in the 1970s. It made you feel like you were in the 1970s by using popular Swedish songs from that time, including ABBA's hit "SOS."

After these two happy and hopeful films, Moodysson made a more serious film called Lilya 4-ever in 2002. Many American movie critics put it on their top ten lists the next year. Lukas Moodysson has said he could not have made the film without his strong Christian beliefs. The religious dreams that Lilja has are the only gentle parts in the difficult world Moodysson shows. When the film was released, critic Dave Kehr from The New York Times said Moodysson was "Sweden's most praised filmmaker since Ingmar Bergman."

His 2004 film, A Hole in My Heart (Ett hål i mitt hjärta), is more of an experimental film than a regular story. He has said it was made to be challenging for the audience. It received a special warning for shocking images in Sweden. Most critics did not like it.

He then made another even more experimental film in 2006, called Container. This movie features narration by actress Jena Malone. The only sound in the movie is a stream of consciousness narration. This means it's like hearing someone's thoughts, which are only loosely connected to what you see on screen.

Lukas Moodysson's work changed direction with Mammoth, released in 2009. Unlike his previous two films, this one tells a story. It was also his first film made in English. It is about a successful couple in New York, their daughter, and her nanny from the Philippines.

His 2013 film We are the Best! (Vi är bäst!) went back to the themes and style of Show Me Love and Together. It is based on a comic book called Aldrig Godnatt by his wife, Coco Moodysson. The movie is set in 1982 and follows the adventures of three teenage girls who start a punk-rock band.

All of Moodysson's main films have been made or co-made by Memfis Film. This is a small Swedish film company in Stockholm. The head of Memfis, Lars Jönsson, likes to work with directors for a long time. He supports even less commercial projects, like Moodysson's A Hole in My Heart and Container.

In 2019, the TV series Gösta premiered. This was Moodysson's first time working in television. It was also HBO's first drama series made in Scandinavia.

Moodysson's Together 99, a sequel to Together, was released in 2023. It is set in 1999 and shows Göran and Klas starting a new shared community. Most of the original actors returned. However, the children's roles were played by new actors. Also, Michael Nyqvist, who passed away in 2017, was replaced by Jonas Karlsson in the role of Lasse.

Personal Life

Lukas Moodysson believes strongly in fairness and equal rights for everyone. He is also a deeply committed Christian. He lives in Malmö, Sweden, with his wife, artist Coco Moodysson. They have three children.
