Vilhelm Ekelund (born October 14, 1880 – died September 3, 1949) was a famous Swedish poet. He is well-known for his poetry books, like Havets stjärna (which means 'Star of the Sea') and Melodier i skymning ('Melodies at Dusk'). His writings often explored the beauty of nature. They also looked at how nature and modern life sometimes struggled against each other.

Ekelund's Life and Work

Early Influences and Poetry

Vilhelm Ekelund's writings were shaped by other thinkers. These included Friedrich Hölderlin, Friedrich Nietzsche, and Emanuel Swedenborg. In his early years, Ekelund focused on writing lyrical poetry. Lyrical poetry expresses strong feelings.

Even though his poems were not very famous then, they became very important. Many later Swedish poets learned from his style. He was especially good at using rhythm and music in his verses. His poems also used strong, clear images.

Changing His Writing Style

Ekelund's poetry grew more complex over time. He started writing in free verse, which does not follow a strict rhyme or rhythm. This made his work a key example for other writers. Poets like Karin Boye and Erik Lindegren were inspired by him.

After 1907, Ekelund changed his focus. He began to feel that poetry was not enough. So, he stopped writing poems. Instead, he started writing essays and short, wise sayings called aphorisms. He wrote in a very personal way. Sometimes, his new style was a bit hard to understand.
